Alternatives to the Traditional Wedding Cake

There will always be brides who want the traditional tiered wedding cake, and there is nothing wrong with that. If a couple want to be more unique, but still have a traditional style of wedding cake, they can opt for different fillings and cake flavors, perhaps each tier a different flavor and type of cake, and maybe, different colors.

It has become somewhat of a trend to go with an alternative to the traditional style of cake. We recently went to a wedding where the cake was two full size bundt cakes on a plate, decorated and in the center hole of the cakes, was fresh flowers. Then all around the full size bundt cakes were mini bundt cakes, all different flavors. It was lovely.

We also went to a wedding where the cake was savory cheese, with different cheeses making up each tier.  Some couples have chosen to go with towers of cup cakes, different flavors and colors, possibly using the same colors as the flowers, bridesmaids dresses and other decorations used for the event.

A few years ago, our daughter Kelly went with a very non traditional cake for her wedding. The theme was ‘Fairy Woodland’. The cake was created by a  friend of the family who is a fabulous baker. She created several different cakes, with cupcakes and small edible logs, mushrooms, plants, flowers and so much more. Each part of the cake was a different flavor and took hours to decorate. It turned out incredible.

Some other options for a non traditional cake are, cheesecakes, a macron tower, mini pies, a doughnut tower,  individual mini cakes, or make it more personal with  a dessert table  filled with the bride and grooms favorite desserts. There is no limit, except your imagination.
