Vintage Inspired Wedding Hair & Makeup

Stumped on how you should do your makeup and hair on your wedding day? Sometimes you just need to look to the past for inspiration! Below are updated hair and makeup looks inspired by the most popular decades in style: the 20s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and 90s. Let’s go back in time and gain inspiration from some of the most stylish looks of all time!

1920

Marcel curls, bobbed hair, and vampy smokey eyes and lips are what come to mind when we think of 1920s beauty. For a more modern take, take inspiration from Emily Blunt and go for a faux bob (if you have longer hair), and more bouncy and sculpted waves around the face. Carey Mulligan in Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby will give you a contemporary alternative to the typical vamp makeup of the roaring 20s. Slightly smokey eyes with grays and metallic rose will help to emphasize the eyes, and light and rosy pink lips will further complete the look.

1940

Fast forward to the 1940s, where you will find the sculpted ‘peek-a-boo’ hairstyle made famous by Veronica Lake and deep, blood red lips. There are gorgeous looks that will still look fresh on your wedding day, but why not go for something softer? Brushed out waves with a relaxed side part like Sienna Miller’s keeps the look fresh. This soft ‘do paired with brown smokey eyes and warm peachy lips will keep the look alluring but flattering and modern.

1950

This fresh updo is a nice alternative to the tight and bouncy short curls we often associate with the style icons of the 1950s. A low updo with carefully placed curls nods to the femininity and curated style of the decade without looking too rockabilly or cartoonish. Deep red lips (more like oxblood) with muted eyes and natural brows will keep you looking classic yet current.

1960

A pulled back wavy style and a delicate cat eye and muted makeup keeps you looking classy and not costumey. Adding a bit of texture to the swept back section of hair will keep your look true to the mod looks of the 60s, with long natural waves grounding the style in the present day. A delicate cat eye just adds a small extra detail to your otherwise simple makeup, making sure you feel updated but true to the style of the 60s.

1970

The laid back style of the 70s can still be yours with a few minor adjustments. Long, loose waves with a straight middle part keeps the look rooted in a laid back hippie style, with extra styling for wedding photos. Keep the look loose and casual with feminine peach lips and cheeks, and sheer coverage on the skin to keep you feeling naturally your best. This is a perfect look for you as a modern flower child.

1990

Bring out the hot rollers! The more androgynous and casual looks of the 90s are majorly back in style at the moment, but you can still look wedding day dramatic by taking a cue from Cindy Crawford and Kendall Jenner. Large, bouncy waves will give you the 90s supermodel look you have always wanted, showcasing your hair’s natural volume and texture. A berry lip with soft eyes and muted tones is the perfect 90s compliment to this voluminous and dramatic look.

We hope we were able to give you the inspiration you needed to look your absolute best on your wedding day. Thanks for reading!
